Puncture Resistance Test

In the course of the development of the new CONTACT Plus, a total of nine tyres has been compared with a competitor’s tyre model in a susceptibility to piercing (blade) test. The Zedler Institute (Zedler – Institut für Fahrradtechnik und -Sicherheit GmbH, Teinacher Straße 51, D-71634 Ludwigsburg. Testing on 16.12.2016) underlined that the CONTACT Plus would perform „distinctly more resistant” against the damages by pieces of glass and comparable items than the competitor’s tyre.  

Procedure

Tyres in the sizes 47-622 (competitor 47-622), 47-559 (47-559) and 42-622 (40-622) were tested. The weight of the tyres was similar within the ETRTO sizes with both manufacturers. The testing was carried out and monitored by the neutral Zedler Institute. In addition to the regular manufacturer information the Continental tyres were uniquely identified by their technical and release documents.

Test conditions

The piercing tests were conducted at temperatures between 20.5 and 21.8 degrees Celsius. All measurements were executed three times on each test specimen, respectively at different spots. The tests were performed at a constant test velocity of 100 mm/min.As the probing device a blade of five millimeters width, whetted on both sides at an angle of 40 degrees was used. This simulates penetrations by foreign bodies such as sharps or sharp stones.  

Results

On an average, the CONTACT Plus was convincing with up to 30% higher puncture protection than the competitor’s comparable tyres.
The piercing power of the blade with the competitor’s test specimens was on average 6% to 23% lower across all sizes than with the comparable specimens of the CONTACT Plus. Please find the individual measurements also in the respective overview on this page.
